The formation of Australian opal is due to acid weathering during the drying out of the central Australian landscape. This happens as the huge ocean covering 60 percent of Australia begins to retreat. Minerals start being leached out of the soil, and as a result pockets and cracks appear, where it forms.

Ethiopian opal, on the other hand, forms high in the mountains as a result of volcanic activity. Unlike the Australian one, it does not form in cracks but is found in volcanic ash in various shapes. It is often petrified vegetation, or it may contain such vegetation as inclusions. The most basic difference between the two kinds of opal lies in the porous nature of the Ethiopian ones. Most of them are also called hydrophane and can absorb water.

If an Ethiopian opal (hydrophane) is soaked in water, it absorbs the water and becomes crystal clear. When it dehydrates, it returns fully to its milky body.
