925 sterling silver ring with 14 carat green amethyst

Product information

Prasiolite is the stone of illusion – transparent and magically changeable. Before it became soft green, it was amethyst. Leave it in the sun and it turns into clear quartz.

It looks deep into the heart of its owner and brings out the best, but also the worst - if its keeper is self-serving, immoral and selfish. Its name comes from “leek” (from the Greek prason), because of the green color.

It is a quartz crystal, as amethyst is. At least 30 kinds of quartz are known: pink, blue, red, green, black - transparent or translucent, dense and even with a “cat's eye” effect. Whatever the color or the degree of transparency, they all have the same chemical formula - SiO2 (silicon dioxide), but they differ in their crystal lattice. In amethyst, for example, there are traces of iron, which gives the crystals a pink or yellow tint. Smoky quartz, on the other hand, absorbs light because of the imperfections in its lattice structure. Quartz is the most widespread mineral on Earth - 12% of the lithosphere - and silicon is the second most widespread chemical element in the Earth's crust after oxygen.

So, back to prasiolite - the green variety of quartz. The beautiful color of this crystal appears when amethyst is heated to 500 degrees. In nature there are very few deposits of natural prasiolite, in Brazil, the USA, Russia, India and Poland. A huge part of the prasiolite on the market is produced by heat-treating amethyst or citrine.

Still, the fact that it has been treated does not mean that the stone is not real. Most colored crystals in jewelry, including precious stones, have been given extra treatment to improve their quality and color. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires are heated to even out their clarity or to strengthen the color. Even the brightest blue sapphires are yellow in their original state, and many of the stunning purple-blue tanzanites were zoisite - a drab green rock.
