The formation of Australian opal is due to acid weathering during the drying out of the central Australian landscape. This happened as the vast ocean covering 60 percent of Australia began to retreat. Minerals started to leach out of the soil, producing the pockets and cracks where it forms.

Ethiopian opal, on the other hand, forms high in the mountains as a result of volcanic activity. Unlike the Australian kind, it does not form in cracks but is found in volcanic ash in various shapes. It is often petrified plant matter or may contain such matter as inclusions. The most basic difference between the two kinds of opal lies in the porous nature of the Ethiopian ones. Most of them are also called hydrophane and can absorb water.

If an Ethiopian opal (hydrophane) is soaked in water, it absorbs it and becomes crystal clear. When it dehydrates, it returns fully to its milky body.
